Youth Development Competencies Program (YDCP) positively engages youth in addressing community needs and enables them to develop competencies to become successful adults and active citizens. The program identifies the most innovative youth-driven projects throughout Russia, and works with experienced local NGOs to recruit youth teams to replicate these projects in new regions. In recruiting the teams, YDCP makes a special point to engage marginalized and at-risk youth, thus reaching a wide spectrum of young people.
To introduce the innovative projects to the new youth teams, YDCP organizes a high-energy event that showcases these projects and allows the youth teams to select the ideas most appealing to them and best suited for their communities. After the Road Show, the youth teams receive funding to implement the projects they selected, and are mentored by the project's original authors throughout the process.
Through implementing these projects, young people become active in their communities, address local needs and the needs of their peers, and develop competencies needed to transition successfully into adulthood. YDCP also develops their professional capacity through ongoing training and mentoring in project implementation, networking, community engagement, and local fundraising. It contributes to the sustainability of their projects by working with the youth teams to ensure local buy-in for their projects and developing relationships with local private and public decision-makers. The ongoing interaction between IREX, regional organizations, project innovators, and the youth teams replicating the projects creates a dedicated network contributing to positive youth development in Russia.
